Course Length: 30 minutes

Overview: This course is designed specifically for hazmat employees – that is, anyone who is employed by a hazmat employer and directly affects hazmat transportation safety. This course will familiarize learners with the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) to help them work safely around hazmat. This course satisfies the General Awareness training requirement 49 CFR §172.704(a)(1).

Please note: 49 CFR 172.704(d) of the HMR requires each hazmat employer to create and retain a record certifying the current training of each hazmat employee. It is the responsibility of the hazmat employer to complete additional company-specific training in order to formally certify each student. Trainers may use the Hazmat Lady certificate for compliance with the recordkeeping requirements in Section 172.704(d)(3). The trainer and the trainer’s company are considered the “person providing the training” in Section 172.704(d)(4). Because of this, trainers should maintain additional records documenting a description or copy of the additional company-specific training materials provided to each student.

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify the required training all hazmat employees must receive
  • Determine if a material is a hazmat and verify its hazard classification using the Hazardous Materials Regulations
  • Recognize and identify hazmat through the use of shipping papers, markings, labels, and placards
